Business travel hotel selection is different from leisure selection in one fundamental way: reliability matters more than experience. You need to sleep well, work efficiently, and get to your meetings on time. Surprises are not welcome.
WiFi quality is the most underrated selection criterion. Hotel WiFi ranges from genuinely fast (100+ Mbps symmetric) to "technically connected but unusable" (2 Mbps shared across the property). Business travelers on video calls need reliable 10+ Mbps upload. The only way to know is to check recent reviews specifically mentioning WiFi speed and stability — hotel spec sheets lie.
Desk quality is the second most underrated factor. Many hotel desks were designed to look good in photos: angled, decorative, with the wrong chair height. A hotel that cares about business travelers has a proper flat desk, an ergonomic chair at the right height, good task lighting, and multiple power outlets within reach.
Breakfast inclusion matters for convenience more than cost. A good hotel breakfast that you can eat in 20 minutes without going outside saves 45–60 minutes compared to finding a café, ordering, eating, and returning. Over five nights, that's 4+ hours of recovered time.
Loyalty programs compound meaningfully for frequent travelers. Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors members accumulate points fast enough to earn free nights within a few months of regular travel. Beyond free nights, elite status provides room upgrades, breakfast inclusion, and late checkout — the last of which is genuinely valuable on travel days.
